We Haven't Talked About Charm Packs or the 5" Precut Squares

Maybe the most popular precut fabric that quilters use is the charm pack. Charm packs as many of us know is the registered trademarked name for a specific line of precut fabrics sold by Moda Fabrics & Gifts. Other fabric manufacturers often use similar names to describe their precut fabric squares that are similar in size and quantity to charm packs. For example, Riley Blake Designs calls their precut 5" square packs the 5" Stacker while Hoffman Fabrics and Marcus Fabrics refer to their 5" squares as charm squares. But no matter what they are called, these 5” bundles of beauty typically contain 42 squares of fabric, each measuring 5 inches by 5 inches, and are often coordinated by color or theme. They are popular among quilters because they offer a convenient way to access a variety of fabrics that all work well together, without having to purchase full yards of each individual fabric.

Charm packs and 5” fabric squares are versatile and can be used in a wide range of quilting and sewing projects. Here are a few ideas:

Quilts: Charm packs can be used to create a variety of quilt blocks, including the classic patchwork square, half-square triangles, flying geese, and more. You can use them to create a quilt top, add sashing and borders, or it may even be possible to use them as backing for your quilt.

Table runners: A charm pack can be a great way to create a quick and easy table runner. Simply sew the squares together in a pattern you like, add batting and backing fabric, and quilt as desired.

Bags and pouches: You can use charm packs to make small bags and pouches. Sew two squares together, add a zipper, and you have a cute and functional pouch.

Pillows: Charm packs can be used to make throw pillows for your couch or bed. Simply sew the squares together, add batting and backing fabric, and you have a custom pillow cover.

These are just a few ideas for the many uses of charm packs or 5” fabric squares. They are a great way to add variety and interest to your sewing and quilting projects.
